Textile Forum is not an art blog as such. We are interested in textiles as an ancient form of human creation, similar to architecture, agriculture, literature (text), music (producing sound) or dance (movement). Art, in the sense of meaning or designation, is an aspect of all these activities. However, art is not an activity in itself, it is not an expression of life without a practical application. The concept of art as a means to convey meaning is a fairly recent one. Since the beginning of the modern age (the Renaissance), “art” has increasingly replaced religion.
Similarly, the concept of fashion has been removed from its original meaning and is being used as a synonym for clothing. Here, a similar change in meaning has taken place. “Fashion is my religion”, we recently read in an exhibition. Nor is “textile” just a fabric; rather it denotes a method for joining flexible materials. Sometimes this can be achieved in an artistic (meaningful) way. The following exhibitions associated with the art scene have come to our attention:
1. Out of Fashion – Textiles in International Contemporary Art at the Gl. Holtegaard Museum in Holte and the Museum Kunsten in Aalborg, Denmark
2.Les Papesses (The Popesses) – Five great women in art represented in the Lambert Collection of Avignon, France;
3. Textiles: Open Letter – Abstractions, Textiles, Art at the Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach, Germany;
4. Kunst-Stoff-Art (Art-Fabric-Type), four exhibitions scheduled from April to December 2013 at the ‘basement’ gallery, Vienna, Austria;
5. Decorum Artist Carpets and Tapestries – a major exhibition at the Musée d´Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France;
6. Art & Textiles – Fabric as a Material and Concept in Modern Art from Klimt to the Present, Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Germany;
7. To Open Eyes – Art and Textiles from the Bauhaus to Today, Bielefeld, Germany
8. Soft Pictures – an exhibition at the Fondazione Sandrello Re Rebaudengo in Turin, Italy
9. Artists textiles – Picasso to Warhol at the London Fashion and Textiles Museum
10.Threads – Art as a metaphor for interweaving, an exhibition at the Museum Arnhem in the Netherlands
Great post! I wish I could travel far and wide to see them all! Just to add to the list- at the end of Jan Artists Textiles- Picasso to Warhol opens at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London UK.
This will show the work of many artists working in textiles and most pieces have not been exhibited before, so I think that will be real treat and a bit of a one off. Kathy
