Exhibition “Fiber Language” – “Art Shoes & Textiles” by Suhandan Äzay Demirkan from 6 to 24 February, 2018 at Galeri A,1481 Sk. No.7 (2. Kordon Yolu) Alsancak, Izmir, Turkey. The artist did send the following text:
“I designed this exhibition in line with the craft revival currently seen in the world…
Fiber art includes innovative art works that explore unexpected relationships between traditional fiber materials, processes and history as well as other creative disciplines.
The exhibition aims to increase awareness of the shifting and influential cultural position of the crafts. Recently I have focused on the revival of Anatolian regional types and textile traditions which I like to combine in my sculptural shoe forms.
Leather and kutnu shoes: “Yemeni” – My ongoing project involves “kutnu”, an old ikat weaving technique practised in Gaziantep, South Anatolia, since the 12th century. The technique is now being kept alive by only a few elderly weavers.
Paper shoes: “Fantasy shoes” questions how viewers will react to the absence of the body…
The collection is a fantasy of the different shoes that a woman dreams of at different stages in her life. A fantasy built on dreams and reality, yesterday and tomorrow, a moment when tradition and modernity intersect with the local and the universal.
Tapestry: This was intended to raise the profile of weaving as an art form and make it more visible.”
